Build It and They Will Come

May 7th, 2014

Just down the road from us is the incredible world-class opera house of Glyndebourne. It’s a perfect example of the ‘build it and they will come’ principle. In the 1930s, when it was founded, when every opera house was in a metropolis, it must have sounded crazy to suggest presenting productions in the Sussex countryside, more than an hour away from London. And yet look what it has become today…

I’m writing this because Sir George Christie, who ran Glyndebourne for nearly forty years, has died today. A good obituary can be found here.
