Writer’s Block Doesn’t Exist

November 9th, 2008

From Philip Pullman’s website:

What do you do about writer’s block?

I don’t believe in it. All writing is difficult. The most you can hope for is a day when it goes reasonably easily. Plumbers don’t get plumber’s block, and doctors don’t get doctor’s block; why should writers be the only profession that gives a special name to the difficulty of working, and then expects sympathy for it?

  1. Well, I once met a doctor who certainly had an “off day” so…. 🙂 (and anyhow sometimes you get a plumber over to the house who really should have been blocked 🙂

  2. What a great way of looking at it! The W B words are to a writer what ‘Macbeth’ is to a thespian… even the thought of the W B words is enough to send shivers down the spine and put fear into the heart!

Philip Pullman seems to have a very healthy view of this tricky demon – If it doesn’t exist – it cannot cause trouble – I must remember that! 🙂
