Salutations to the Dawn

April 17th, 2014

Dawn-Over-New-Zealand-1940big

Look to this day
for it is life,
the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all
the realities and truths of existence,
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of beauty.

For yesterday is but a memory,
And tomorrow is only a vision.
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a memory
of happiness,
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore, to this day.

~ Kalidasa ~ 5th Century Sanskrit Poet and Dramatist

  1. Beautiful. But he was a Brahman, of the richest caste, and he lived in a time where not the complete Earth was in danger of really, really getting shocked to it’s very corners, to the deepest Ocean, the tiniest Insect and all that is. I wonder how his poetry would be these days…

  2. Good point, Hennie. Didn’t know that about him. I still like the poem, though.

  3. How lovely to see this. In the Order of the Sacred Nemeton we use this in our Morning/Dawn Office.
