Crisis and Opportunity

Have a look at the trailer on this website. It’s well-made and informative

  1. It certainly is an interesting film. What was interesting to me was that it focused on the various chemicals that they found in the bees – but this didn’t necessarily provide the reason why the adult bees are disappearing (note that they indicated that they didn’t find the bees on or around the colony).

My understanding is that bees have an amazing sense of navigation – so I can’t help but wonder as we criss-cross the skies with wi-fi, satellite and mobile radio traffic – and criss-cross the land with power lines – whether CCD is partially brought about by the bee’s internal navigation system is being disrupted?

In addition – when I move house I need to allow my cats to acclimatise to their location – I wonder if the same is also true of the bee population and that they are just making their own way home…

  2. David, that is exactly what I thought when watching the trailer. Mobile phone signals … these have increased exponentially over the last few years, and closely parallel the onset of CCD.

But the chap who said “death by a thousand cuts” is nearer to the mark. The latest thing is only the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Funny, all the predictions of the collapse of civilisations etc concentrate on dwindling oil supplies etc … who knew it would be the humble honeybee that would bring us toppling … and I see an ironic parallel between what is happening to the bees and what will probably happen to us as a species in the not too distant future.
