Astonished by what already is

June 2nd, 2008

In elderhood, you find yourself every day more astonished by what already is than by what could be.

  1. Elderhood……..somehow its like a full spiral, going back to early childhood, astonished by what is, in the now, like a little one would be.
I had a friend many years ago, that shared with me that he was asked to accompany an Elder in a British Columbia Native tribe to regress back to when he was born. The Elder told my friend it would take 2 weeks of him going backwards, to the point my friend would even have to change his nappies! My friend agreed and was with the Elder night and day for 2 weeks.
My friend told me how innocent and pure and in wonderment the Elder became as he was a ‘child’ again. Then the transition back into the womb….and beyond. The Elder lived the rest of his life in simple wonderment, with wisdom of all his experiences, astonished and delighted by what IS, back in his old man body, with the purity of real knowing. The future, or what could be became unreal, now was enough…. is enough.
Elderhood…… is with many of us now as we travel through what is.
thank you for this quote, Philip.
